Five Layers for a Cooler Night’s Sleep

The best-dressed beds have one thing in common: they come apart quickly. A bed you can adjust at 2 a.m. — without waking anyone — is the whole secret to sleeping cool.

Start with a breathable base. Percale sheets let air move where sateen would trap it, and undyed cotton keeps the first layer simple. Add a light coverlet instead of a duvet during shoulder seasons, then fold a throw across the foot of the bed for optional warmth.

Order matters

Sheets first, then coverlet, then quilt if you need it. Each layer should be able to disappear in under a second — which rules out tucked hospital corners everywhere except the bottom sheet.

Finally, keep one spare pillowcase set in the nightstand. Flip to the cool side more than once a night? Swap the case. It sounds fussy; it is not. It is five minutes of laundry for eight hours of comfort.
